Nostalgic Nerds Podcast

About the show

The Nostalgic Nerds Podcast explores the history of technology and what it teaches us about the past, present, and the future. Renee and Marc have a theory...A way of looking at the world, you might say. They believe that human behaviour rarely changes, but each generation adopts the technology of the day to expand reach, scope, and speed.

They tend to focus each episode on a single topic (batteries, LEDs, printers, the internet, shipping containers, telecom fraud, the humble refrigerator) and trace it from personal memory through its historical development to the infrastructure patterns we live inside today.

It's a conversation between two tech experts who know each other well and share a genuine curiosity. Two friends talking through an idea at a table.

How each episode is made

Every episode moves through three acts without ever announcing them: the past, with personal memories and origins; the present, analysing how the technology actually works and what it costs; and the future, with grounded speculation based on where the trends point. Each one closes with an original song about the subject, written for the show.

Weekly episodes, weekly songs.

Marc Massar

Co-host

Marc Massar has spent over two decades at the intersection of technology and business, helping banks, payments firms, and regulators run faster without falling over. He’s held senior leadership roles across the globe, including at JPMorgan, HSBC, and Worldpay, and now advises clients on payments, operating models and “outcome-based frameworks” that keep executives both intrigued and slightly nervous.

Beyond boardrooms, Marc’s curiosity extends from Victorian infrastructure to generative AI, fueling his research, consulting, and podcasting. A lifelong tinkerer, he restores orchards and ponds, experiments with glass and hobby paints, and will happily debate GPU energy curves or the virtues of a Japanese vegetable cleaver.

That eclectic mix powers The Nostalgic Nerds Podcast, which he co-hosts with Renee, where personal stories meet tech history, and every gadget, standard, or theme park ride has a story worth telling.
